Tiananmen Square
When you stand on Tiananmen Square you are in the real heart of Beijing. It was here Chairman Mao Zedung first rised the flag of the Peoples Republic of China October 1st 1949. The square covers 40 hectares and is surrounded by some of the most impressive buildings in Beijing. The National People´s Congress meeting place Great Hall of the People Parliament (Renmin Da Hui Tang) is an magnificent building on the west side and right across the square you find two museums. One is the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, a historical museum with a special focus on the revolution and the other is the Museum of Chinese History where you find prehistoric fossils as well as pottery and masterpieces of bronze.
At the south side you will find two giant sculptures showing heroes from the revolution in front of Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall which is the mausoleum containing the embalmed body of Chairman Mao. On the south side there is the fantastic stonewall with the Gate of Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace), where you enter the Forbidden City. Over the gate is a giant portrait of Chairman Mao that is seen from all over the Tiananmen Square. In front of the portrait, on Tiananmen Square is the guarded flag pole where the flag of the new republic first was rised.
